Technology Profile

Title of Product/Design/Equipment:

Fabrication of All Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (AVRFB) Stack - 0.5 kW
Value Proposition:
At present, Redox Flow Batteries (RFBs) are very useful for integrating renewable energy into the grid by enabling long-duration, scalable, and sustainable energy storage systems. The energy density is predominantly dependent on the concentration (M) or volume of the electrolyte(L), whereas power density is determined by area (cm2) or number of cells. This key feature in RFBs enables the power ranging from kW to MW level and its energy can range from kWh to MWh. Hence, RFBs are widely recognized as a potential option for storing bulk electricity, especially from solar and wind. The individual cell components of redox flow batteries (RFBs) stacks are Aluminium end plates, graphite bipolar plates, graphite felts, copper current collector, gasket and membrane. During the course of know-how transfer All Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (AVRFB) Stack of 0.5 kW will be fabricated and demonstrated.

Summary Application:

Electrochemical energy storage, stationary applications to cover peak loads & load balancing, grid energy storage, uninterrupted power supply, and long duration.

Advantages:

The RFB offers a unique advantage of decoupling energy and power in contrast to conventional battery systems (Li-ion and lead acid batteries). The energy density can be tuned by varying the concentration (M) or volume of the electrolyte (L), whereas power density depends upon the active area (cm2) or number of cells in the stack.
