The motivation for this proposal work originates from the need to gain the understanding of
cathodic protection (CP) potential used for C-steel in different environments. Currently -850 mV vs.
Cu/CuSO4 potential is used as NACE standards for C-steel in aerated environments while -950 mV
vs. Cu/CuSO4 for anaerobic bacterial environments. However the detail understanding of this value
with respect to various bacterial forms such as heterotrophic, iron oxidizing and manganese
oxidizing bacteria is not studied. Thus the project intends to investigate into to work both in the lab
and field to look at the right potential required for the cathodic protection protection. On the basis of
the results, energy saving cathodic protection can be developed in different environments viz. soils
and water.
