Professor Samir K. Brahmachari is Secretary to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India and Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India.
Prof. Brahmachari's research work primarily revolved around DNA and its structure. He has pioneered functional genomics initiative in India and led the Indian Genome Variation Consortium. Recently, under his guidance, IGIB-CSIR has successfully mapped the human genome for the first time in India.
As a member of the Expert Group on Human Rights and Biotechnology Commission of United Nations, Prof. Brahmachari has also been involved in issues relating to Human Genome research ethics and Human Rights. His present passion is the CSIR-led Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD) Project and the Pharmacogenomics Project for affordable health programme in India, with global participation.
