Fuel Cells Overview

The fuel cell Group within the Electrochemical Power systems division at Central Electro-Chemical Research Institute (CECRI, carries elemental and functional research work on electrode materials for energy conversion systems; including ionic conducting materials for intermediate temperature fuel cell systems, through characterization of the novel materials and optimization of preparation parameter variables for two layer and three layer catalyst electrodes. The group’s pioneering research in the fuel cell field from the year 1976 is the source for new developments in efficient energy conversion technology.

The group’s major projects include research on low cost two and three layer electrodes for alkaline fuel cell with non-precious metal catalysis, cost effective cathode materials for molten carbonate fuel cell, for its performance and durability, optimization of ion conducting materials for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell, materials for zinc bromine red-ox flow electrochemical energy conversion system and basic work on development of nano structured carbon and graphene active layered electrodes for red-ox flow fuel cell systems. Further the group team up with other national laboratories, institutes and universities, and congregate graduate students, postdoctoral research fellows and visiting scientists to acquaint knowledge in their perspective field.
